The Texas AgriLife Extension Service offices in Brewster, Jeff Davis and Presidio counties will conduct the High Country Beef Cattle Workshop from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Dec. 4 in Room 130 of Sul Ross State University’s Range Animal Science Building on east Hwy 90 in Alpine.

Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be offered (one laws and regulations and two general).

“We’re really excited about this program,” said Logan Boswell, AgriLife Extension agent for Brewster and Jeff Davis counties. “We have some really top speakers and presentations lined up to back the meeting’s purpose, and that’s profitability for the beef cattle producer.

“For example, we’ll have Dr. Ron Gill, professor and AgriLife Extension specialist, who is a recognized authority on livestock handling as one of our main presenters. He’ll be speaking on the basics of low-stress cattle handling and herd-handling perspectives. He’ll then conduct a cattle-handling demonstration, so people can actually observe what he is talking about. Ron and Dr. Bruce Carpenter will also offer new ideas and facility design for low-stress weaning. Carpenter is the AgriLife Extension livestock specialist at Fort Stockton. All-in-all it should be a valuable day for those in the beef cattle business.”

Other topics will include range mineral supplementation, beef cattle market update, private landowner rights and herd health concerns.

Registration is free, but organizers ask that those planning to attend pre-register by Nov. 30 so an accurate meal count can be made.

To pre-register and for more information, contact Boswell at 432-837-6207, or Jesse Lea Schneider, AgriLife Extension agent in Presidio County at 432-729-4746.
