Who stands out as excellent farmers and leaders in your community? Have they received the Indiana Master Farmer award? If not, why not?

Perhaps no one took the time to nominate them. Take a couple of minutes to request a Master Farmer nomination form. Then find an appropriate person to help you supply the necessary information, and a few other people to write letters of support. You could bring recognition to this farmer and your community.

Master Farmer nominations are due Feb. 15. You still have plenty of time if you act now. Here are the basics you need to know.

What: The Indiana Master Farmer program began in the modern era in 1968. Well over 200 farmers and more than a dozen Honorary Master Farmers have been honored. If you want to see a list of past Master Farmers, request one when you ask for a nomination form.

Who: Any Indiana farmer can be nominated, but nominations come from their peers, not Indiana Prairie Farmer staff. The award is co-sponsored by the Purdue University College of Agriculture. A person can be nominated individually, or a couple can be nominated together if they are both actively involved in some facet of the farm operation. Honorees usually excel at farming, protecting natural resources, and providing leadership locally and beyond.

When: Nominations for the 2022 class of Master Farmers are due Feb. 15. Honorees will be featured in the July issue of Indiana Prairie Farmer. Award ceremonies will be held in conjunction with the Indiana Farm Management Tour sponsored by Purdue’s Ag Economics Department, held in early to midsummer.

Where: The location for the 2022 Indiana Farm Management Tour is yet to be determined. Location will be announced early in 2022. Besides appearing in print, stories about each Master Farmer will appear on IndianaPrairieFarmer.com during the week the issue hits mailboxes.

Why: The sole purpose of the program is to bring well-deserved recognition to Indiana farm families. The program and awards event have become another way to celebrate Indiana agriculture.

Nominators are invited to the awards ceremony. Reserve your spot now by submitting a successful nomination. Start by requesting a nomination form at [email protected]; write to P.O. Box 247, Franklin, IN 46131; or call 317-431-8766. Or visit IndianaPrairieFarmer.com. There is a link in the story for the nomination form. The story also lists past winners since 1968.
