Minnesota will finally have its own specialized agricultural license plate for sale to motorists in 2022.
First, however, the new plate needs a design. To help with that effort, FFA and 4-H members are invited to tap their creativity and create design ideas. All submissions will be evaluated, and one will be chosen as the featured design on the new plate.
The 2021 Minnesota Legislature approved the special ag plate as part of the state’s transportation bill. The plate will have an annual fee of $20 that will go to support agricultural programs provided by FFA and 4-H.
“We are excited that students will help design the new plate, which will celebrate agriculture while allowing Minnesotans the opportunity to invest in students through the Minnesota FFA Foundation and Minnesota 4-H Extension,” says Val Aarsvold, Minnesota FFA Foundation executive director. “Although it took a number of years to become a reality, the years were used to grow support and awareness of the agriculture plate, both in the Legislature and among Minnesotans. We were grateful to the legislative champions who kept the agricultural plate moving forward.”
The idea for a state ag plate was proposed in the legislature in 2011 by former state Sen. Gary Kubly, Granite Falls. Connecting it to provide support of FFA and 4-H programs was proposed in legislation in 2018.
The design contest is open until Oct. 1.
Contest rules must be closely followed. Failure to do so will disqualify artwork.
Contest rules include technical requirements for the design and how to enter:
• The primary area for the design is a 3-inch square or circular area on the left side, along with space above and below the plate numbers.
• The image must include a depiction of lands and activities related to agriculture.
• Use of full color is permitted and encouraged.
• Entries must be the contestant’s original work and may not be traced or copied from photographs or other art. Photographs taken by the student may be used as references in the development of the design.
• No logos, emblem lettering, words, signatures or initials may appear in the artwork.
The Minnesota Department of Motor Vehicles reserves the exclusive right to authorize the reproduction of the winning design. Also, no royalties will be provided for the use of the design.
