Come August, there are historic jewels that glow in small towns such as Hanley Falls, Minn.
We’re talking about get-togethers with folks who enjoy working with antique farm equipment, participating in tractor parades and feeding a crowd at their local church food stand.
The 45th annual Pioneer Power Inc.’s Good Old Days and Threshing Show attracted more than 1,000 participants and visitors Aug. 3-4 in this western Minnesota town. Each year, a different tractor manufacturer is the featured “guest.” This year, Massey-Harris took center stage.
“We had the best weather in 10 years and a better, wide variety of tractors and exhibitors this year,” says Jeff Schwartz, president of the Pioneer Power club. “We had around 150 exhibitors from four states, plus we get motorcyclists who are traveling on Highway 23 on their way to Sturgis, S.D. That is fun.”
Exhibitors offered demonstrations with antique machines shelling corn, cutting silage, baling straw and threshing. Also featured were a sawmill, shingle maker, lathe mill and wood planer. And we can’t forget the homemade vanilla ice cream — churned with a belt-driven ice cream maker that is powered by small gas engines.
