The indictments say that Phipps’ election campaign illegally paid for an aide’s debts, that she altered the evidence of the payments, that she lied under oath to the State Board of Elections and that she encouraged her former campaign manager to lie as well.

She is charged with obstruction of justice, conspiracy to obstruct justice, perjury, subordination of perjury and aiding and abetting perjury. She faces a maximum of four years in jail.

Bobby McLamb and Linda Saunders, former campaign officials in Phipps 2000 run for the office, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges, including extorting money in connection with the awarding of the state fair contract. The interim ag commissioner has voided that contract, on advice from the state’s attorney general.

Federal investigators are continuing their investigation.
