Four people, all members of a prominent Scott City family, were killed shortly before noon on Friday, April 8, when a Beech Baron 58, a six-seater, twin-engine airplane crashed about three miles from Phillip Billard Field in Topeka.

Neighbors said the impact of the crash shook houses in the area as the plane went down about three miles northeast of the airport in a muddy cornfield adjacent to Kansas Hwy. 4.

The victims were Dylan Spencer, his wife Amy (Mitchell) Spencer, both in their 30s, and their two young daughters. They were on their way to spend Easter with family and friends near Holton.

The plane was registered to Precision Ag & Seed LLC at Scott City, a company owned by Volgamore Family Farms.

The Spencer family has deep roots in western Kansas, with Dylan the third generation to operate the family business, Spencer Pest Control.

Both Dylan and Amy Spencer were community leaders, with Dylan serving on the city council and as a commission on the Groundwater Management District.

All the Spencer family members are big supporters of Kansas State University and it was Dylan's grandfather, Dick, who donated the money for the first artificial turf football field at K-State.
