Many cornfields across the Midwest saw an explosion of tar spot pressure in 2018, and WinField United agronomist Jason Roth warns farmers should be prepared to manage the disease next season. The high occurrence suggests the disease inoculum will remain in the soil to impact crops next season if conditions are conducive, and Roth says it’s clear that some hybrids tolerate the disease better than others. Fungicides can be effective for control, and Roth urges growers to run strip trials to evaluate treatments, since there’s still much to learn about the disease. Check out this gallery to see a recap of what pests and diseases were found in 2018.
