Southeast farmers on course to set records

Southeast farmers are eying record yields in 2018, and farmers in one state pretty much ready to set records across the row-crop board.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service August Crop Production Report dropped Aug. 10, and it showed some Southeast farmers are eying record yields for 2018. Farmers in one state pretty much ready to set records across the row-crop board.

If all things go well the remainder of the growing season and the NASS report holds true Alabama farmers expect to set new yield records for corn, cotton, peanuts and soybeans in 2018.

Alabama corn for grain is forecast at 40 million bushels, up 2 percent from 2017, with average yield reaching 170 bushels per acre, or up 3 bushels from last year. Cotton production, pegged at 1 million bales for 2018, is up 25 percent from last year, and, according to the report, will be the state’s largest cotton production since 1955. Yield is forecast at 1,000 pounds per acre, up 98 pounds from last year.

Peanut production is forecast at 628 million pounds, down 11 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at 4,000 pounds per acre, up 350 pounds from last year.

The report puts soybean production at 17 million bushels, up 7 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at 48 bushels per acre, up 2 bushels from last year. Peach production at 4,950 tons is forecast up 230 percent from last year’s crop which lacked necessary chill hours.

Highlights from the report include:

FLORIDA

In Florida, cotton production is forecast at 220,000 bales, or 42 percent more than in 2017. Yield is forecast at 935 pounds per acre, up 176 pounds from last year, and a new record high yield for Florida cotton growers if realized.

Peanut production is forecast at 604 million pounds, down 9 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at 4,000 pounds per acre, which would match the state’s record yield set in 2014.

GEORGIA

Georgia corn for grain production is forecast at 52.8 million bushels, up 22 percent from 2017. Yield is forecast at 173 bushels per acre, a 3 bushel decrease from last year.

Cotton production is set at 2.9 million bales, up 30 percent from last year. Peanut production is forecast at 3.11 billion pounds, down 14 percent from 2017. Yield is forecast at 4,500 pounds per acre, up 120 pounds from last year.

Soybeans production at 7.22 million bushels is up 15 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at 38 bushels per acre, down 4 bushels from last year. Peach production rebounded from last year’s devastated crop and is forecast at 25,000 tons for 2018, up 150 percent.

SOUTH CAROLINA

South Carolina corn for grain production is forecast at 39.4 million bushels, down 11 percent from 2017. Yield is forecast at 127 bushels per acre, a decrease of 9 bushels from last year.

Cotton production at 500,000 bales is up 6 percent from last year. Peanut production is forecast at 365 million pounds, down 23 percent from 2017. Soybeans production at 15.2 million bushels is up 2 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at 37 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from last year.

The 2018 peach production forecast is up 396 percent from last year’s crop that suffered from inadequate chill hours followed by several days of freezing temperatures.

TENNESSEE

Tennessee corn farmers are expected to reach a record yield this season. Corn production is forecast at 127 million bushels in 2018, up 5 percent from the previous year. Yield was estimated at 174 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from the 2017 level. Acres for harvest as grain were estimated at 730,000 acres, up 20,000 acres from 2017.

Soybean production for Tennessee is forecast at 84.3 million bushels, an increase of 2 percent from 2017. Yield was estimated at 49 bushels per acre, down 1 bushels from a year ago. Acreage for harvest as beans was estimated at 1.72 million acres, up 60,000 acres from the previous year.

Tennessee farmers expect to produce 18.6 million bushels of winter wheat during 2018 from 295,000 acres for harvest. The expected crop for 2018 would be down 3 percent from the previous year. Growers expect a yield of 63 bushels per acre, down 7 bushel from 2017 and unchanged from July.

Tennessee cotton production is projected at 755,000 bales, up 3 percent from last year. Cotton yield is forecast to average 1,050 pounds per acre, up 17 pounds per acre from the previous year. Producers expect to harvest 345,000 acres, up 5,000 acres from 2017.
