The Beadle Conservation District and Ducks Unlimited have signed a memorandum of understanding to create a 310-acre regenerative agriculture demonstration farm south of Huron, S.D.
The purchase of the land will be financed through private philanthropy and public grants. Beadle Conservation District will own the property.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service holds easements on the wetlands on the land, South Dakota Game Fish and Parks administers agreements that keep the land open for public hunting access, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service provides technical and financial assistance for habitat restoration, capital improvements and ongoing management.
The land will be managed by a steering committee featuring representatives from the Beadle Conservation District, Ducks Unlimited and NRCS.
“Regenerative agriculture brings conservation and agriculture together to benefit both a producer’s operation and wildlife,” says Adam Putnam, CEO of Ducks Unlimited. “The Beadle County farm will demonstrate soil health practices landowners may not have tried. We hope the farm will help us refine these management tools and reduce the producers’ risk for adapting the practices by allowing them to observe and learn before they try them.”
