Adding CRP acres, and Palmer amaranth beats another herbicide

The Around Farm Progress podcast explores news from USDA on enrollment of 2 million acres into the Conservation Reserve Program; we get a weed resistance update.

USDA's Farm Service Administration is accepting more than 2 million acres from producers and landowners for the Conservation Reserve Program, which is good news for producers. And there's news that Palmer amaranth may have developed a new resistance.

To dig into the USDA news Jacqui Fatka, policy editor, Farm Progress, talks with Zach Ducheneaux, administrator of FSA, for more details. Ducheneaux shares that land in CRP isn't taking out of production but put into a different kind of production. They also discuss some other key issues the agency is dealing with these days, including expanded support for livestock operations.

Brad Haire, Southeast Farm Press, shares news that Palmer amaranth has developed a new resistance issue, which he explains. Haire, who lives in Georgia, observes that this region of the country has seen development of a range of herbicide resistance issues and he details what that has really cost farmers in one state. Note, news of a new resistance in Palmer in Georgia does not mean it won't show up elsewhere.
