A 1974 John Deere 4230 is Donald Henningfeld’s favorite tractor. The Elkhorn farmer bought the tractor new in late 1973.

“It’s the only new tractor I have ever owned,” he says.

The 4230 has extra-heavy front wheels and added side steps. “At 12,000 hours, it was overhauled once in 1989,” he says. “It still has the original muffler and starter. Right now it’s on its fourth set of tires.”

Henningfeld bought the tractor for $8,900.

“In its younger days, it farmed between 400 and 500 acres by itself. Now it’s a chore tractor.”
