Farmers likely hear this all too often – we’ll have to be ready to feed 10 billion people by 2050. But how will agriculture meet this oft-stated challenge head on? Rob Saik has a good idea: sustainable intensification. The idea is to maximize the technology available to agriculture to make the most of the inputs we have while also boosting sustainability.

Saik discussed sustainable intensification, as well as a long list of other key issues facing the industry ahead of going on stage at the recent Farm Futures Summit. From the challenges of broadband to the role of smallholder farmers, to the challenge of Europe’s Farm to Fork program, he covers a lot of topics. The key is that farmers are up to the challenges ahead, provided ideologies don’t get in the way of achieving increased sustainability.

He started farming at 14 but grew by starting new businesses and he’s constantly moving forward with new ideas. His latest venture – AgVisor Pro – seeks to put expert intelligence in the hands of any farmer in the world. It just shows that innovation in agriculture keeps marching forward. Give it a listen.
