On Wednesday evening, low-level Asian soybean rust was found in Mississippi’s northern Delta region. Reported by Tom Allen, assistant Extension/research professor at the Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville, Miss., the rust is “in a commercial soybean field in southeastern Tunica County. Soybeans were in the R6 growth stage, not quite to R7 at this point.

“The only thing that changes with regards to suggestions (see bottom for link) is the number of counties where rust has been detected — 19 as of Thursday morning.

“Please do not overreact when it comes to soybean rust. I know this is difficult not to do but read all the information at hand, weigh the options, and make a decision based on your selling price of soybeans, overall management strategy (do not forget about insects at this point), and overall yield potential of the particular soybean field/crop.

“One rumor to clear up: soybean rust has not been detected in the Natchez, Miss., area. Nor, to date, has rust been detected in any of the southern counties in Mississippi. I’ve heard from several people across the southern counties that rust was detected around Natchez and this is simply not true.”
