Healthy Farms, Healthy Communities is billed as the inaugural Midwest regional workshop for those interested in soil health, regenerative agriculture and organic farming. It’s sponsored by a new company, Geosmin Agricultural Solutions. The workshop is slated for March 23 at Hidden Hollow Farm near Crawfordsville, Ind. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. EST, and registration is $25 per person.

Geosmin Agricultural Solutions was started by Ashley Hammac to offer crop and environmental consulting to farmers. The focus is on those transitioning to soil health systems, and also on those making the move to organic production.

Hammac says the one-day workshop will focus on sustainable agroecosystems, new technologies for manure and nutrient management, alternative methods for weed management, transitioning to organic production and managing reduced-till organic farming.

Farmers and experts will lead discussions. Scheduled to participate are Dylan DeSutter, a regenerative farmer from Attica, Ind.; Mike Stites, a regenerative farmer, from Kokomo, Ind.; and Michelle Wander, a specialist in agroecology at the University of Illinois.

Also participating in Healthy Farms, Healthy Communities are Chad Penn, a USDA-Agricultural Research Service soil scientist from the National Soil Erosion Lab; Karla Gage, a weed ecologist at Southern Illinois University; Ashley Adair, a Purdue Extension organic ag specialist; and Lea Vereecke, an organic crop consultant with the Rodale Institute.
