The USDA crop progress report out July 2 shows the corn condition and soybean condition fell from last week.
Corn condition
The crop progress report shows 76% of the corn is either in good or excellent condition. That’s down a point from last week’s 77%.
One state that is losing condition rating is Missouri because of the dry conditions in most of the state. Only 52% of the corn crop is in good or excellent condition.
So far, here are the good/excellent conditions in the top five corn producing states: Iowa (78%), Illinois (85%), Nebraska (86%), Minnesota (83%), Kansas (53%). Iowa, Minnesota and Kansas fell from last week’s numbers.
Soybean condition
The soybean conditions across the country did fall two points from last week. The report shows 71% of the crop in good/excellent condition. Last week, the report showed 73% was in good/excellent condition.
So far, here are the good/excellent conditions in the top five soybean producing states: Illinois (78%), Iowa (76%), Minnesota (77%), Nebraska (86%), North Dakota (77%).
Most states reported lower conditions. In the Midwest, Iowa, Minnesota and North Dakota show a decrease from last week’s condition ratings.
Soybeans blooming
The crop progress report showed 27% of the soybeans planted this year are blooming. That’s over two times as fast as the four year average of 13%.
Some states to note in the Midwest are Illinois with 44% blooming; 33% in Indiana; 28% in Ohio; 21% in Iowa; and 20% in Wisconsin. Missouri is reporting 52% blooming.
Corn silking
The corn crop is ahead in maturity, similar to the soybeans. The crop progress report shows 17% of the crop silking, that’s twice as much as the four year average of 8%.
Illinois, Indiana and Iowa are ahead in maturity. Illinois producers say 40% of the corn is silking, that’s up from the four year average of 11%; Indiana is reporting 18% up from 5% and Iowa reports 7% up from 1%.
