Minnesota farm numbers down 100 from previous year

USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service reports there were 67,400 farms in the state in 2021.

The total number of farms in Minnesota in 2021 was 67,400, down 100 farms from 2020, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service-Farms and Land in Farms 2021 Summary report.

Total land in farms for Minnesota during 2021 was 25.4 million acres, the same as in 2020.

The average farm size in Minnesota for 2021 was 377 acres, up 1 acre from 2020.

There were 400 fewer farms 2021 in the $1-million-and-over sales class category: 4,100 last year, compared to 4,500 in 2017. Farms and ranches are classified in sales classes by USDA by adding sales of ag products and government program payments.

The number of farms remained unchanged during this time period in two sales categories: 7,700 farms in the sales class from $100,000 to $249,999, and 4,800 farms in the sales class from $500,000 to $999,999.

The number of farms in the United States for 2021 is estimated at 2,012,050, down 6,950 farms from 2020.

The number of farms increased in all sales classes except from $1,000 to $9,999, from $100,000 to $249,999, and $1 million or higher.

In 2021, 51% of all farms had less than $10,000 in sales, and 81.5% of all farms had less than $100,000 in sales. In 2021, 7.4% of all farms had sales of $500,000 or more.

The total amount of land in farms, at 895.3 million acres, decreased 1.3 million acres from 2020.

The biggest change for 2021 is that producers in the sales class from $1,000 to $9,999 operated 640,000 fewer acres than in 2020.

In 2021, 30% of all farmland was operated by farms with less than $100,000 in sales, while 41% of all farmland was operated by farms with sales of $500,000 or more.

The average farm size for 2021 is 445 acres, up from 444 acres the previous year. Average farm size increased in the sales class of $1 million or more, and decreased or remained unchanged in all other sales classes.
