You don’t have to be a Chevy person to appreciate this truck. Simplistic style coupled with craftsmanship made the 1949 Chevrolet 3800 a truck worth owning and driving. Richard Fellows, New Washington, Ind., is the proud owner of a restored dark-green model.

When the truck is parked in his toolshed, you have to wait for him to take off the tarp before you can get a good look at it. A truck this nice isn’t one you leave uncovered to collect dust and bird droppings.

Restored by a truck enthusiast across the Ohio River in Kentucky, the Chevy’s doors are so shiny they reflected the image of a dog and another tractor parked in the toolshed. The interior was restored to near mint condition, as well.

Fellows has an appreciation for older things. He still has the 1976 car he drove while dating his wife. “It’s got 400,000 miles on it, and it hasn’t needed an overhaul,” Fellows says. “I did have to replace the water pump and do a few other minor repairs.

“Several kids drove it as their first car. My 11-year-old granddaughter likes the car. Who knows, maybe she will want to drive it when she gets ready.”

One thing is for sure. If she or anyone else wants to drive the car, it will be ready to go. It shares space with a vintage John Deere 4020 tractor that also could go to the field anytime. It still does some work around the farm, Fellows says.
