If you’re looking for a bull to upgrade your beef cattle breeding program, you may want to focus the search on the 89th Indiana Beef Evaluation Program performance tested bull sale happening this Saturday, April 16. The sale will be held at the Springville livestock auction facility near Springville in Lawrence County, Ind. The sale is slated to begin at 2 p.m. EDT. The address of the auction facility is 4426 West State Road 54, Springville.

The IBEP conducts a winter bull test each year, as well as a summer test. Bulls must qualify based on their performance in parameters such as pounds of gain per day to become eligible for the sale. Nick Minton, director of the IBEP Bull Test Station at the Feldun Purdue Ag Center near Bedford, Ind., says bulls that qualify must also pass a breeding soundness exam before they can be sold.

Expect around 100 bulls to sell in this auction. The majority of bulls in this year’s winter test were Angus, but other breeds should be represented, including Hereford, Charolais, Simmental and Simmental percentage.

What sets this sale apart is that Minton and his crew collect lots of data on each animal. Besides the simple data like weight per day of age, ultrasound determines ribeye area and rib fat thickness, among other parameters. You can access this data and study it before the sale. For other sale details, see the 2021 Winter Test webpage.

Find the IBEP Bull Test Station at 1117 State Road 458, Bedford. Call 812-279-4330 for more information about bulls selling April 16.
