The 25th edition of the Tri-State Forest Stewardship Conference will draw foresters and landowners from Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin to the Highland Community College campus in Freeport, Ill., on March 14. 

This three-state gathering in northern Illinois will feature 20 speakers, ranging from university researchers to private landowners. Topics will include practical applications like setting up a timber sale, estate planning, cost-sharing opportunities, conservation easements and prescribed fires. 

“This conference is geared toward the private landowner and will offer science-based, useful knowledge that people can use in their woodlands,” says Billy Beck, assistant professor and Extension forestry specialist with Iowa State University Extension. 

Timely topics, knowledgeable speakers 

This one-day educational program is presented by Extension educators with ISU Extension and the University of Illinois. 

Additional topics will include timber taxes, game and non-game wildlife management, and soils and soil erosion in woodlands. A talk will also be held on maple syrup as a hobby, led by Troy Heeren, agricultural specialist with ISU Extension. 

Concurrent sessions will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to manage woodlands using good stewardship principles. 

The conference in Freeport will be at the Highland Community College’s Student Conference Center. The agenda is available online, along with a list of presenters. Registration is $40 per person and should be done as soon as possible, as space is limited. Plan to register no later than March 10. Registration must be done online.
