A cattle ranch in western South Dakota and tiled cropland on the Minnesota-South Dakota border are two sales from fall auctions that stand out.

Outstanding cattle ranch
A 1,573-acre ranch near Philip, S.D., sold for $1,350 at auction in early October. “An outstanding cattle ranch,” the sale bill said. “A great fit for many cattle operations. Great winter protection.” The ranch’s features included cropland; lots of wildlife habitat; grass meadows with productivity ratings in 80s that could be farmed; grasslands with western, green needle and other prairie grasses; a “huge” barn; well-made corrals; thousands of trees; scenic draws and coulees along Bad River and Medicine Creek; and a 4,000-square foot home (great family home or roomy hunting lodge) built in 1932 and remodeled in 1995, according to the sale bill. — Piroutek Auction, Milesville, S.D., Phone: 605-544-3316. piroutekauction.com.

80 acres brings $3,800/a in Brookings County, S.D.
An 80-acre unimproved farm close to Elkton in Brookings County, S.D., sold for $3,800 per acre in an auction Sept. 22. About half of the land was tillable and the rest was in hayland, pasture and trees. Nelson County, N.D., farms sells for $2,600/a
Two farms in Nelson County, N.D., were sold at auction in September.

Approximately 280 acres of “good cropland with great soil productivity indexes” near Petersburg sold in two tracts for $1,825 and $2,600 per acre. About 240 acres near McVille sold for $1,800 per acre. Nearly all of it had been farmed at one time. This year, there were 153 acres of cropland. Tiled land on S.D.-Minn. border brings $7,425 per acre
Approximately 193 acres in Moody County, S.D., and Pipestone County, Minn., sold for $7,425 per acre at an auction in September. It was high quality cropland that had been tiled. The land in South Dakota had an overall .875 county assessor soil rating and a 82.7 Surity AgriData productivity rating. Investment grade recreational property sells for $2,610 per acre
Approximately 240-acres in a hilly, wooded area in northeast South Dakota sold for $2,610 per acre at auction in September. Of the 240 acre, 192 acres was being farmed. The rest of the Robert County, S.D., land was in grassed waterways, mature trees and a large pond.
