New cost of production studies for oranges, lemons and walnuts are available from the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE).

The studies are based upon hypothetical farms using common practices in the region. Farm advisors, local growers and researchers provided input and reviews.

Sample Costs to Establish an Orchard and Produce Oranges, 2005, San Joaquin Valley and Sample Costs to Establish an Orchard and Produce Lemons were prepared by Neil V. O'Connell, UCCE farm advisor, Tulare County; Craig E. Kallsen, UCCE farm advisor, Kern County; Mark W. Freeman, UCCE farm advisor, Fresno County; Karen M. Klonsky, UCCE specialist, UC Davis Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics; and Richard L. De Moura, research associate, UC Davis Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.

The two citrus studies show current per acre costs to establish and produce oranges and lemons. Included in the studies are descriptions of the assumptions used to identify the current costs for individual field operations, material inputs, cash and non-cash overhead. Various tables show profits over a range of prices and yields, monthly cash costs, hourly equipment costs, and the whole farm annual equipment, investment, and business overhead costs.

Sample Costs to Establish a Walnut Orchard and Produce Walnuts, 2005, North Coast — Lake County was prepared by Rachel B. Elkins, UCCE farm advisor, Lake and Mendocino counties; Karen M. Klonsky, UCCE specialist, UC Davis Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics; and Richard L. De Moura, research associate, UC Davis Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.

The walnut study is based upon a hypothetical 20-acre farm using common practices in the North Coast region. The study shows current per acre costs to establish and produce walnuts on a small farm purchased for a home site. Included in the study are descriptions of the assumptions used to identify the current costs for individual field operations, material inputs, cash and non-cash overhead. Various tables show profits over a range of prices and yields, monthly cash costs, hourly equipment costs, and the whole farm annual equipment, investment, and business overhead costs.

The studies are available online at http://coststudies.ucdavis.edu <http://coststudies.ucdavis.edu/> or can be ordered from the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of California, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616, and the local UC Cooperative Extension offices, or by phone at (530) 752-4424. Similar reports are available for many commodities from 1931 to present. A $3 handling fee is charged for each report ordered.
