1. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is leaving USDA today and is said to be on a flight to Iowa. His next plans have not been announced. – The Seattle Times

2. Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump has left the naming of the agriculture secretary as his last department head selection. – Reuters

3. USDA on Thursday trimmed bushels from last fall's big U.S. corn and soybean harvest and reported the lowest wheat seedings in 100 years. – Farm Futures

4. President Obama created 1.35 million acre Bears Ears National Monument and the Gold Butte National Monument last month. Bears Ears has been called "one of the wildest, most intact landscapes in Utah." The land provides wild onions and sumac berries, pinon nuts, deer and rabbit. – NPR

5. The International Dairy Foods Association, National Milk Producers Federation, National Association of State Departments of Agriculture and U.S. Dairy Export Council say Canada is blocking imports from the United States, which is in direct violation of the North American Free Trade Act and the World Trade Organization. – Farm Futures

6. Cargill released its financial results for the fiscal 2017 second quarter and first half ended Nov. 30, 2016, on Jan. 10. The results show its adjusted operating earnings rose 80% in the fiscal second quarter and net earnings for the quarter were down 29%. – Farm Futures

7. China's State Council approved the merger of China National Cotton Reserve Corp. and China Grain Reserves Corp. The newly combined company will have assets of $213 billion and will be the country's biggest agriculture product group. – Bloomberg
