Using the most efficient irrigation method for a particular crop, along with increased use of surface water, can help ease demands on the Mississippi Delta’s shallow alluvial aquifer well into the second half of this century, a Mississippi State University study shows. A computer model developed at Mississippi State University to simulate crop irrigation in the Mississippi Delta through 2055 indicates that greater use of surface water could reverse the decline in the aquifer.
