The Institute for Rural America will offer two new educational sessions for farmers at this year’s 3i Show on Friday, Oct. 13. Farm Bill, Tax and Legal Issues will begin at 1 p.m., followed by Working through Times of Turbulent Change in Agriculture at 2:30 p.m.

Roger A. McEowen, Kansas Farm Bureau professor of agricultural law and taxation at Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kan., will speak on the new farm bill and tax and legal issues. The legal environment in agriculture is constantly changing. His presentation will provide a current perspective on the farm bill, tax and other legal issues facing farmers in difficult times. Besides a current update, McEowen will answer questions.

McEowen is author of “Principles of Agricultural Law” and a recipient of the American Agricultural Law Association Distinguished Service Award.

Charlie Griffin will present Working through Times of Turbulent Change in Agriculture. Real farm cash receipts are down 14% in 2017 compared to 2015 and 36% since 2012. Meanwhile, farm debt soars and leverage surges to all-time highs. This presentation will provide suggestions for managing change and challenges that exist today. Griffin will also answer questions.

Griffin is a research assistant professor in the School for Family Studies and Human Services, College of Human Ecology, at Kansas State University. He began his career assisting with the impact of the 1980s farm crisis. He has continued to support agricultural families as they work together, make decisions together, and nurture their families and farm businesses.

The Institute for Rural America is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization with a mission to promote opportunity for independent farmers and rural communities through education, research, advocacy and service. For more information, visit instituteruralamerica.org.
