The poinsettia is native to Mexico, and the tradition of its Christmas appearance goes back to the 1500s. Not only do its colors and blooming season make it a perfect plant for the holiday season, the plant plays a role in agriculture. It generates millions in revenue for producers and retailers. Growing the plant requires attention and expertise, and most of the plants are grown in greenhouses. More than 70 million poinsettias are sold ahead of Christmas.
