One of the worst droughts in memory is raising the specter of famine once again in the Horn of Africa. The World Food Programme is rushing humanitarian aid to nearly 8 million people in places like Somalia and Ethiopia. This time, the WFP’s Josette Sheeran says, the food aid appears to be gaining a foothold in preventing the nearly 1 million deaths from starvation that occurred in the region in the 1980s.
