The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) is recruiting for applicants to fill vacancies on four commodity commissions.

To qualify to serve as a commissioner, an applicant must be an Oregon resident, a US citizen, and have an active interest in improving the positive economic development of that commodity. The six positions are open until filled. Applications received by June 30, 2022, will be considered first.

The Albacore Commission has two openings. The producer 3 position will serve through June 30, 2025. The handler 1 position will serve through June 30, 2024. Albacore processor/handler applicants may be involved in marketing or dealing in albacore as an owner, agent, employee, or broker and must have collected the assessment for the last three consecutive years on albacore tuna. The commission has a total of nine members: two are processors, five are fishers, one is a public member. They meet at least quarterly. The commission is administered by a professional staff in Lincoln City.

The Oregon Alfalfa Seed Commission has two openings for a producer. People in both positions will serve until June 30, 2025. The commission, funded by growers sets policy and direction, and makes decisions about commodity-specific marketing, research, and educational projects.

The Oregon Fine Fescue Commission has one handler position open. The person in this position will serve until June 30, 2023. The commission’s is an industry-funded agency with the purpose of generating demand for Oregon Chewings and creeping red fescue for homeowners, lawn care service operators, golf course superintendents and park managers.

The Oregon Sweet Cherry Commission has one producer position open. The producer one position will serve until June 30, 2025. The purpose of the commission is to coordinate and collect assessment revenue used for research to improve agricultural practices and research to increase cherry sales domestically and internationally.

The director of the Oregon Department of Agriculture appoints all commodity commissioners. The Director’s decision is based on several factors such as – but not limited to – candidate experience and commitment to service as well as industry input and counsel.
