John Deere and Chip Foose unveiled a Foose-customized 1970 JD 4020 tractor at Commodity Classic. The tractor came from an Ohio farm where it was still being used. The engine, transmission, clutch, fuel system and other major components underwent some mechanical updating, in addition to the cosmetic redesign.

“I’ve looked at tractors for years and always thought they’re narrow and look almost like a dry lakes car or some of the old Indy cars,” Foose says. “I wanted some of that racing feel to the tractor. With the turf tires in the back and the three-ribbed tires in the front, it carries that theme all the way through from the tires to the sheet-metal work to the paint job – but it’s still a John Deere.”

The tractor can still be used in the field, and all new accessories and fabrication are bolt-on items and can be fairly easily removed. The overhauled machine will be given away as part of a John Deere promotion; thousands have already signed up to win it.
