Dr. Allison Jack remembers ending the 2020 growing season feeling satisfied.

As the Technical Product Manager for NewLeaf Symbiotics, she saw firsthand how the company’s ag biological product, Terrasym, performed: Terrasym 401 for soybeans and Terrasym 450 for corn have proved consistent yield performance, averaging a 75% win-rate with a +2.0 Bu/A advantage in soybeans and a 79% win-rate with a +4.5 Bu/A advantage in corn.

Terrasym’s success led Jack - and other leaders at NewLeaf Symbiotics - to push for more. How could they continue to innovate and deliver ag biologicals that would enhance nutrient uptake, leading to increased root development, plant health, and ultimately yield - while providing growers with an improved experience?

The answer? Expand the Terrasym product line to include a planter box application.

For the 2022 growing season, NewLeaf Symbiotics will offer Terrasym for corn and soybeans in convenient planter box applications. Terrasym planter box application, paired with a seed lubricant, allows growers to  conveniently add Terrasym to crops, eliminating the need to mix a slurry and putting Terrasym directly in the hands of farmers.

The company partnered with Ag Ingenuity Partners to collect data on how Terrasym for planter box applications would perform in commercial environments.

And - more importantly - they turned to the people who understood Terrasym firsthand: Their growers.

“We view our growers as co-developers of this technology with us,” Jack said. “At NewLeaf, we continue to collaborate with growers and third-party contract research organizations to listen to their feedback and use it to spearhead the growth and expansion of Terrasym.”

After talking with farmers and retailers, NewLeaf found that growers were looking for a solution that would maximize already limited seed space.

“Once seed reaches the farm gate, even if the farmer wants Terrasym, it is tough to convince them to return it to our shop for additional treatment,” the Xceleration Ag LCC team said. “With data backing the efficacy of the new formulation and the ability to apply Terrasym directly at the farm gate, we ease the farmers’ mind by offering true in-season flexibility and avoiding the upfront cost of overseed treatment.”

NewLeaf Symbiotics continues to develop pipeline products for other crops, including tomatoes, wheat and leafy greens, while also continuing progress in solving the billion dollar corn rootworm problem, which upon EPA approval will be available to farmers for the 2023 growing season.
