Southeast crop yields, production predicted as harvest rolls

Here are the crop yield and production forecasts for 5 Southeast states based on the September Crop Production Report by USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Record or near-record yields and production are still being predicted for U.S. corn, cotton and soybeans, and the lower Southeast is predicted to produce more peanuts, too.

Here are the crop yield and production forecasts for 5 lower Southeast states based on the September Crop Production Report by USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service:

Alabama - Corn for grain production is forecast at 38.4 million bushels, up 7 percent from 2015. Cotton acreage is revised up to 345,000 planted and 342,000 harvested with production forecasted at 690,000 bales, up 25 percent from 2015. If realized, this will be a record high yield of 968 pounds per acre. Peanut acreage remains unchanged at 175,000 acres with production forecasted at 675 million pounds, up 2 percent from 2015. Soybean production at 17.6 million bushels is down 13 percent from last year.

Florida - Cotton acreage is revised up to 102,000 planted and 100,000 harvested with production forecasted at 180,000 bales, up 18 percent from 2015. Peanut acreage is revised up to 155,000 planted and 146,000 harvested with production forecasted at 569 million pounds, down 13 percent from 2015. Sugarcane production is forecast at 17.5 million tons, down 1 percent from 2015. Strawberry production is forecast at 2.40 million cwt, down 2 percent from last year.

Georgia - Corn for grain production is forecast at 62.1 million bushels, up 27 percent from 2015. Cotton acreage is revised down to 1,190,000 planted and 1,180,000 harvested with production forecasted at 2.40 million bales, up 6 percent from 2015. Peanut acreage is revised down to 720,000 planted and 710,000 harvested with production forecasted at 3.27 billion pounds, down 6 percent from 2015. Soybeans production at 9.95 million bushels is down 27 percent from last year. Spring onion production is forecast at 2.96 million cwt, up 10 percent from 2015.

South Carolina - Corn for grain production is forecast at 42.9 million bushels, up 77 percent from 2015. If realized, this will be a record high yield of 130 bushels per acre. Cotton acreage is revised up to 190,000 planted and 189,000 harvested with production at 370,000 bales, a 139 percent increase from last year. Peanut acreage is revised down to 110,000 planted and 106,000 harvested with production forecasted at 382 million pounds, a 45 percent increase from 2015. Soybeans production at 14.0 million bushels, a 43 percent increase from last year. Tobacco harvested acreage revised to 13,500.

National - Corn production is forecast at 15.1 billion bushels, up 11 percent from last year. Based on conditions as of September 1, yields are expected to average 174.4 bushels per acre, down 0.7 bushel from the August forecast but up 6 bushels from 2015. If realized, this will be the highest yield and production on record for the United States.

Soybean production is forecast at a record 4.20 billion bushels, up 7 percent from last year. Based on September 1 conditions, yields are expected to average a record 50.6 bushels per acre, up 1.7 bushels from last month and up 2.6 bushels from last year. All cotton production is forecast at 16.1 million 480-pound bales, up 2 percent from August and up 25 percent from last year. Yield is expected to average 802 pounds per harvested acre, up 36 pounds from last year.
