In the three states of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, the following percentages are listed as of Aug. 23, 2009:
Kansas lists 85 percent of its cotton setting bolls, compared to a five year average of 88 percent and 89 percent in 2008.
In Oklahoma, 84 percent of the cotton is setting bolls, compared to 87 percent in 2008 and a five year average of 88 percent.
In Texas, 85 percent of the cotton is setting bolls, compared to 78 percent in 2008 and a five year average of 86 percent.
Percent bolls opening as of Aug. 23, 2009, in Kansas is 5 percent, compared to none in 2008 and a five year average of 2 percent.
Oklahoma reports none opening, compared to 5 percent in 2008 and a five year average of 7percent.
Texas has 15 percent bolls opening, compared to 19 percent in 2008 and a five year average of 18 percent.
Cotton crop condition as of Aug. 23, 2009, in Kansas is 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 51 percent good and 11 percent in excellent condition.
Oklahoma has none in the very poor condition status, 2 percent in poor condition, 39 percent fair condition, 55 percent good and 4 percent in excellent condition.
Texas reports 14 percent in very poor condition, 15 percent in poor condition, 29 percent in fair condition, 31 percent in good condition and 11 percent in excellent condition.
All of these statistics reported by the National Cotton Council.
USDA's August report projected 2009 world cotton production to be 105.9 million bales, down 1.03 million bales from estimated 2008 production.
