Arizona Agri-Weekly: monsoon rains in high gear

Rain: Seventeen of Arizona’s 21 weather stations recorded precipitation. Tucson received 2.29 inches.Melons: Arizona growers shipped cantaloupes, honeydews, mixed and miscellaneous melons, and watermelons.Cotton: Squaring was complete on 92 percent of the acreage. Sixty percent of the acreage had set bolls.  Alfalfa: Conditions range from fair to excellent statewide.

The Arizona Agri-Weekly report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service in Phoenix released July 23, 2012.

Field crops

Cotton squaring was complete on 92 percent of the acreage; compared to the five-year average of 91 percent. Sixty percent of the cotton acreage has set bolls compared to the five-year average of 62 percent.

Cotton conditions are fair to excellent.

Alfalfa conditions range from fair to excellent statewide. Alfalfa harvest is active on more than three-quarters of the growing area across the state.

The durum wheat harvest is complete.

Vegetable, fruit, and specialty crops

Arizona growers shipped cantaloupes, honeydews, mixed and miscellaneous melons, and watermelons.

Weather summary

Temperatures were mostly below normal across Arizona for the week ending July 22, ranging from 4 degrees below normal at Parker to 6 degrees above normal at the Grand Canyon.

The highest temperature of the week was 110 degrees at Roll and Parker. The lowest reading was 43 degrees at the Grand Canyon.

Seventeen of the 21 Arizona weather stations recorded precipitation. Tucson received the most at 2.29 inches. Kingman and Maricopa received the least at 0.02 inches.
