Based on year-end surveys, here is the rundown of 2007 Nebraska acreage yields and stocks for crops and hay:

Corn for grain production in Nebraska is estimated at 1.47 billion bushels, up 25% from 2006, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service field office in Nebraska. Yield of 160 bushels per acre is 8 bushels above last year and third highest on record. Farmers harvested 9.2 million acres of corn for grain, up 19% from a year ago.

Soybean production for 2007 totaled 190 million bushels, down 24% from last year. Yield, at 50.5 bushels per acre, ties the 2005 record high. Area for harvest, at 3.77 million acres, is down 25% from 2006.

Sorghum for grain production in 2007 is estimated at 23.5 million bushels, up 23% from last year. Yield is estimated at 98 bushels per acre, up 18 bushels from 2006. Area harvested for grain was 240,000 acres, unchanged from a year ago, which was the lowest since 1953.

Hay production totaled 6.3 million tons, up 9 percent from the previous year's crop. Acreage harvested is 2.65 million acres, down 150,000 acres from 2006. Yield, at 2.38 tons per acre, is up 0.33 ton from last year. Alfalfa production is up 2% from a year ago and all other hay production is up 29%.

Nebraska's winter wheat seedings for the 2008 crop are expected to total 1.95 million acres, according to NASS. This acreage level is down 5% or 100,000 acres, from last year. Subsoil moisture supplies were mostly adequate to short as the planting period began and changed little throughout the planting season. Weather conditions since planting have left the crop condition rated 60% good and excellent, near last year.
