BOO! OK, these scarecrows are not scary. But David Hedrick thinks they are effective at shooing away birds. David Hedrick

David Hedrick drove into Decatur County, Ind., to find this handsome pair pictured above. His efforts earned him a gift card for being featured in the Spotted … in Indiana column. He found these works of art along County Road 700 West in northern Decatur County. These creatures have names, and somehow Hedrick knows them.

“I am so blessed to live near creative people,” Hedrick says. “This addition appeared in mid-June. I haven’t seen any aerial marauders in the area since Eunice and Delbert were placed on guard.

“Note that Eunice is on a single pole and her skirt rotates her with the wind, so she points toward the direction of the incoming wind. Delbert’s flag indicates wind speed.”

Pretty clever, huh? Bet these two aren’t much help at keeping out deer and raccoons. The raccoons that once raided my barn have now set sights on my garage. And people everywhere are complaining about deer damaging gardens, cornfields and soybean fields this year.

Find the tractor

Here’s a challenge that’s easy if you live in northern Indiana. There’s a cool John Deere pedal tractor adorning the entrance to a farmstead somewhere along Indiana 14 between Winamac and Rochester. Find it, send a digital picture and earn a chance to win your own $25 gift card. If we get more than one picture, we will draw for the gift card.

How do I know the tractor is there? I passed it headed to Winamac. I had no time to spare, but I was going to snap a shot on the way back.

No, they didn’t move the tractor or the farm. I got sidetracked and scooted past it.

So, find it and send your photo to [email protected]. And if the farmstead is yours, send a picture and get a gift card, too!
