Jay M. Lillywhite, professor and department head for New Mexico State University’s Department of Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business, has been named interim associate dean and director of academic programs for NMSU’s College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences.
Following recommendations from faculty and staff, College of ACES Dean A. Rolando Flores appointed Lillywhite to serve as the college’s interim associate dean and director of academic programs, effective Aug. 1. Lillywhite replaces Jerry Hawkes, who has taken a position at Casper College in Wyoming.
“I would like to express my gratitude to Jay Lillywhite for his willingness to take the double charge, at this critical time, of associate dean and director of ACES academic programs while continuing to be the department head of Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business,” Flores said.
As interim associate dean and director of academic programs, Lillywhite will work with Dean Flores, who also serves as the college’s chief administrative officer, to administer the academic programs of the college. Lillywhite also will be responsible for promoting academic achievement, teaching excellence and leadership. Additionally, he will direct the college’s recruitment, retention, advising, scholarship, internship and ambassador programs.
“I am excited to serve in this new role and look forward to the opportunities to build on the many great programs that have been developed in the college and to serve the students and faculty at NMSU,” Lillywhite said.
Lillywhite will serve as interim associate dean until a permanent hire is announced.
Lillywhite, who has a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Purdue University, a master’s degree in economics from Utah State University and an undergraduate degree in economics from Brigham Young University, began his career at NMSU in 2003, teaching in the College of ACES’s Department of Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business.
Lillywhite teaches courses focused on business management, marketing and financial management for agricultural firms. His research has centered on consumer preferences for a variety of New Mexico agricultural products, market development for New Mexico agricultural products, food safety and agricultural fairs.
Since 2015, Lillywhite has served as the department head for the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business and Department of Extension Economics in the College of ACES. He will continue serving in those capacities as he carries out duties as interim associate dean and director of academic programs.
Throughout his 15-year career at NMSU, Lillywhite has received several awards and honors. In 2014, he received an honorary state degree from the New Mexico Agricultural Education and FFA Association. He was awarded NMSU’s Donald C. Roush Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009. He also was named academic advisor of the year for the College of ACES in 2008 and 2006.
