People who love cattle are already prepping for the biggest event of the fall. Some may argue it's the biggest event of the year. Even kids that don't show in the summer may find a calf to show at this event.

It's the Hoosier Beef Congress, now billed as the largest single state cattle show in the country.

Joe Moore, executive director of the Indiana Beef Cattle Association, says this year's show is December 5, 6 and 7 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

It's the only beef cattle show with Christmas trees in the corner of the show ring! For steer and heifer-showing enthusiasts, it's like Christmas came early. Usually about 1,500 steers and heifers are exhibited or offered in sales held during the event.

The first deadline is for those who want to enter calves in the All Star and Breed Sale program. Entries are due by October 15 for the sales. There are a few exceptions. The deadline for the junior show registration, the highlight of the weekend, is November 1. Entries must be postmarked by that date.

This show is so popular it even features an online auction for the first 30 prime stalling locations. Contact IBCA at 317-293-2333 for information on this special event.

Many activities besides showing cattle make up the weekend. There are numerous ways for youth to become involved. Visit the IBCA website to learn about some of the opportunities for kids who want to become involved in Hoosier Beef Congress.

Activities besides the steer and heifer shows and sales include showmanship contests for juniors, a tradeshow and many other events. It's all spelled out in detail in the calendar of events. You can access it now at the IBCA website, Moore says.

He looks for another large show and plenty of participation again this year.
