Grazing, Cover Crop Conference Scheduled For June 2

If planting is done on your farm, you might want to attend a field day in Arrowsmith on Saturday June 2, 2012, 10 am to 3 pm.

The day will start with the Cover Crops program which will include a freshly dug soil pit, financial assistance options, and Dr. Joseph Armstrong, Illinois State University, discussing the effect of nitrogen application to cover crops. 

The pasture walk will begin at 1 p.m. with topics on rotational grazing, Endophyte-friendly fescues, ways to extend the grazing season with annual forages and cover crops, and pasture improvements.  Lunch will be provided for registered attendees.

The Cover Crop Field Day/Pasture Walk is sponsored by the Illinois Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative, Kankakee County Graziers, Illinois Forage and Grassland Council, University of Illinois Extension, NRCS, Earlybird Feed & Fertilizer, Schuette Seeds, and Pro Harvest Seeds.

The event will be held at the Elton Mau farm, which is located at 31086 E. 1300 N Road in Arrowsmith. If you're traveling from Bloomington, take Route 9 east for 14 miles from the Eastland Mall to Road 3000 E and turn south. Stay on 3000 E for 1 mile, then go east on 1300 N Road. The Mau farm is 1.25 miles east on the north side of the road.

Folks coming from the east on I-74 should exit at LeRoy and go north on Route 150. At the 4-way stop, go west and follow 150 for ½ mile until you get to Casey's on the north side of the road. Turn north, this is 2600 E Road, and drive 8 miles to 1300 N Road. Turn right, or east, on 1300 N and go 5.25 miles to the Mau farm, which is on the north side of the road.
