Glenn Pendleton Family Farms of Pasquotank County won the annual North Carolina Soybean Yield Contest with an entry of 93.3 bushels per acre, besting the old state yield record by .4 bushels per acre.

Glenn and Sharon Pendleton received the top yield award from Tom Melton, associate director of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service during the North Carolina Commodities Conference in Durham Jan. 15.

The contest is based on yield from a measured and verified three-acre plot. The old state record entry of 92.9 bushels per acre was set in 2006 by Phil and Mike McLain of Iredell County.

The soybean yield contest is administered by North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension and the awards are sponsored by the North Carolina Soybean Producers Association. As winners, Glen and Sharon Pendleton will receive one expense-paid trip to Commodity Classic, the national conference and trade show for the U.S. corn, sorghum, soybean and wheat industries, in New Orleans, March 3-5. The Pendleton’s Extension agent, Al Wood, will also receive one expense-paid trip to Commodity Classic for his role in producing the winning yield.

The second place winner was Neil Manning of Washington County with a yield of 89.9 bushels per acre. Third place winner was Angela Berben of Washington County with a yield of 84.4 bushels per acre. Washington Count Extension Agent Anna-Beth Stewart was recognized for assisting both Washington County winners.

(Northern Piedmont) – Matthews Family Farms of Yadkin County., 80.3 bushels per acre; James Boggs was the agent.

(Southern Piedmont) – Wood Farm LLC of Cherokee County., 76.8 bushels per acre; Silas Brown was the agent.

(Southern Coastal Plain) – Locklear Brothers Farm of Robeson County, 76.3 bushels per acre; Mac Malloy was the agent.

(Northern Coastal Plain) – Mike Gay of Greene County., 64.5 bushels per acre; Roy Thagard was the agent.
