Extension hosts 'Barriers to Bushels' workshops

Seminars will be held in Little Falls, Willmar and Appleton.

University of Minnesota Extension will host its “Barriers to Bushels” seminars at three locations across central Minnesota in mid- to late February.

Current, research-based information will be presented to control corn and soybean costs. University Extension Educators and specialists will discuss topics with proven fertilizer, pest, soil and weed management with the intent to ultimately increase a producer’s margins and to take control over resistant pests, weeds and diseases.

Past participants tell us that they have profited and value the research-based and timely information from the Barriers to Bushels meetings. The speakers encourage an open discussion format designed to support audience interaction.

Program cost is $30 which includes a meal (provided courtesy of local sponsors) and handouts. Agendas, speakers and topics vary by site.

February 16: Little Falls, 9:30 am – 2:30. Includes lunch at the Cabin Fever Saloon and Eatery.

* Corn and Soybean Disease Update – Dave Nicolai
* Managing Insects With Genetic Traits and Resistance in Mind – Ken Ostlie
* Weed Control with Resistance Tough Weeds In Mind – Jeff Gunsolus
* Optimizing Starter and Pop-up Fertilizer, and other corn fertilizer issues - Dan Kaiser

February 24: Appleton,  9:30 am – 2:15. Including lunch at Shooter’s Bar and Grill.

Topics include:
* Corn and Soybean Diseases – Doug Holen
* Weed Management, Future Resistance Outlook – Jeff Gunsolus
* N management for cheap corn – Fabian Fernandez
* Managing Insect Resistance – Ken Ostlie

February 25: Willmar, 7:30 am to 12:00. Starts with breakfast at Best Western Plus Convention Center,

Topics include:
* Managing Insect Resistance – Bob Koch
* Weed Management, Future Resistance Outlook- Jeff Gunsolus
* N Management for Cheap Corn – Fabian Fernandez
* Corn and Soybean Diseases – Dave Nicolai
