Nathan Childs, USDA Economic Research Service, discusses domestic and global rice outlook .

Dr. Nathan Childs will discuss U.S. and Global Rice Situation and Outlook in a University of Arkansas webinar, Rice Situation and Outlook & NASS August 1 Rice Stocks Report Analyzed, August 30, 3 p.m. central time.

Following Child’s presentation USDA NASS Regional Director Eugene Young will discuss the latest Rice Stocks Report and address any attendee questions related to rice stocks.

“The August 30 Webinar will present and analyze the most current USDA forecasts for both the 2018/19 U.S. and global rice markets,” says Bobby Coats, University of Arkansas agricultural economist and webinar host. “For the U.S., a substantial boost in production is expected to lead to larger ending stocks, despite expanded trade and domestic use, and to lower farm prices,” Coats says.

“Globally, world rice trade is projected to again reach a new record in 2019, led by steady growth in demand from Sub-Saharan Africa and continued strong purchases by China. Little change is expected for global ending stocks in 2018/19, despite projected record global consumption.”

Childs is an agricultural economist with USDA’s Economic Research Service. His current activities include managing ERS’ contribution to the rice situation and outlook program and supporting the Department’s annual Baseline forecasting activities.

Young will discuss the August 1, 2018, USDA NASS rice stocks report; a look at the remaining rough rice and milled rice on hand from the 2017 crop. The presentation will also include a brief look at how the data is collected and summarized for the report.

Young is the regional director for the USDA-NASS Delta Regional Office located in Little Rock, Arkansas, which services the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
