Oklahoma Peanut commission celebrates 50 years

Oklahoma Peanut Expo will include production updates, marketing, insurance, new variety report and a look back at 50 years.

The Oklahoma Peanut Commission will celebrate its 50th anniversary as part of the annual Oklahoma Peanut Expo March 26 at the Quartz Mountain Resort, Lone Wolf, Okla.

Mike Kubicek, long-time executive director of the Oklahoma Peanut Commission, will close the conference with “Fifty Years: A Quick Look Back.” Kubicek has announced that he is retiring from the commission this year.

The Expo agenda includes a market update from Tyron Spearman, Peanut Farm Market News. Spearman also will be Expo emcee.

Crop production information will include a disease management update from OSU Extension plant pathologist John Damicone; weed management from Todd Baughman, OSU Institute for Agbiosciences; and field trial evaluations from Rebecca Bennett, USDA/ARS Center for Peanut Improvement, Stillwater.

National Peanut Board delegate Gayle White of Frederick, and Ryan Lepicier, NPB senior vice president, Marketing & Communications, Atlanta, will update growers on “Perfectly Positioned: Realizing the Power of a Unified Industry,” during a luncheon presentation.

An afternoon session features updates on the new peanut crop insurance program from Keith Schumann, Vice-President, AgriLogic Consulting, and a report from USDA/ARS plant breeder Kelly Chamberlin on Venus, a new high oleic Virginia variety.

Preceding the Expo, representatives of the peanut seed trade will meet for the 70th annual Texas/Oklahoma seed quality meeting. The seed session begins with breakfast at 7 a.m. A cookout is scheduled for the March 25 at 6 p.m.

Ron Smith has spent more than 40 years covering Sunbelt agriculture. Ron began his career in agricultural journalism as an Experiment Station and Extension editor at Clemson University, where he earned a Masters Degree in English in 1975. He served as associate editor for Southeast Farm Press from 1978 through 1989. In 1990, Smith helped launch Southern Turf Management Magazine and served as editor. He also helped launch two other regional Turf and Landscape publications and launched and edited Florida Grove and Vegetable Management for the Farm Press Group. Within two years of launch, the turf magazines were well-respected, award-winning publications. Ron has received numerous awards for writing and photography in both agriculture and landscape journalism. He is past president of The Turf and Ornamental Communicators Association and was chosen as the first media representative to the University of Georgia College of Agriculture Advisory Board. He was named Communicator of the Year for the Metropolitan Atlanta Agricultural Communicators Association. More recently, he was awarded the Norman Borlaug Lifetime Achievement Award by the Texas Plant Protection Association. Smith also worked in public relations, specializing in media relations for agricultural companies. Ron lives with his wife Pat in Johnson City, Tenn. They have two grown children, Stacey and Nick, and three grandsons, Aaron, Hunter and Walker.
