New hires in S.D. ag development

Dakota Digest: South Dakota natives take positions with the Department of Agriculture.

NEW STAFF: The South Dakota capitol building rises above the trees in Pierre, S.D. The Department of Agriculture has hired two new people to work in its ag development division.

Jeremy Freking has been named outreach and operations director and Bryan Sanderson has been named business development director of the South Dakota Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Development Division.

Freking is from Heron Lake, Minn. and has previously been the director of the South Dakota Soybean Association and Soybean Research and Promotion Council, as well as the South Dakota Biotech Association.

He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural industries and marketing, with an emphasis in plant and soil science.

Sanderson worked at Cargill and Land O’ Lakes Purina, and he managed a feed yard. He’s from Lake Preston, S.D., and graduated from South Dakota State University with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and an agricultural business minor.

“Jeremy and Bryan bring a vast array of experience and knowledge to the positions,” says Mike Jaspers, South Dakota secretary of agriculture. “We are very excited to have them work to further the agriculture industry in South Dakota.”

North Dakotan elected to biodiesel board
Ryan Pederson, a Rolette, N.D., soybean farmer representing the North Dakota Soybean Council, was recently elected to the governing board of the National Biodiesel Board.

S.D. Cattlemen re-elected officers
The South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association recently re-elected its slate of officers for another one-year term. Larry Stomprud, a cow-calf and seedstock producer from Mud Butte, will serve as president; Steve Ollerich, a cattle feeder from Dell Rapids, vice president; and Allen Walth, a cow-calf producer from Glenham, secretary-treasurer.
