BETTER MARKETING: Learning how to use crop marketing tools and strategies is the focus of upcoming meetings for farmers sponsored by ISU Extension. Farm Progress

With unpredictable crop prices and tight margins, marketing can make a difference in the profitability of row crop production. How well producers get paid for a year’s worth of work can be wrapped up in just a few marketing decisions. Several workshops sponsored by Iowa State University Extension will be held this month for producers wanting to learn how to improve their marketing skills.

The first workshop, “Women Marketing Grain,” will assist women in developing plans for marketing old- and new-crop corn and soybeans. The workshop is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Key Co-op, 1128 Pinder Ave., Grinnell. Lunch will be provided. Registration costs $25 and can be paid at the door, which opens at 9:30 a.m.

Strategies, tools and market planning

In this workshop, women will learn about marketing strategies, tools and market planning from ISU Extension and Iowa Farm Bureau specialists, as well as local grain merchandisers. Participants will engage in hands-on activities and learn to develop written crop marketing plans.

In addition, women will learn how to:

  • recognize crop marketing terms and sources of obtaining current futures and cash market prices

  • understand basis, and futures carry, cost of grain ownership, supply-demand fundamentals and technical chart signals

  • identify seasonal futures and cash price trends

  • use crop marketing tools, including spot cash sales, forward cash, hedge-to-arrive, basis and minimum price contracts

Preregistration is required on or before Feb. 7 by contacting Cathy Lents at 641-623-5188 or [email protected] at the ISU Poweshiek County Extension office.

Central Iowa Ag Marketing Club

In addition to the “women only” grain marketing workshop, three additional meetings are scheduled for farmers in central Iowa in mid-February. Any producer interested in attending any of these three Central Iowa Ag Marketing Club meetings is welcome.

Participants will learn about:

  • futures prices and basis trends cost of grain ownership

  • separating the futures prices from local basis offered, and

  • how to use marketing tools such as hedge-to-arrive, basis contracts and minimum price contracts.
