While producers continue to note high variability in their fields this year, yields posted last week on Feedback From The Field improved noticeably. Ratings also were up sharply, though they still lag behind those in USDA’s Crop Progress reports.

Typical of this year’s diversity were reports out of Indiana. The best corn yields put up so far, 262 bushels per acre, were noted southeast of Indianapolis.  But to the northeast of the capital another farmer rated corn only fair at 165 bpa, with soybeans poor at 48 bpa. Wet conditions set the crops back.

“Had our yearly average rainfall total in May through July!” said the grower.  “Soybeans are very short and lack pods. Yields for soybeans from 27 bu. to 55 bu. per acre so far in the area with the mid to upper 40's common.”

Minnesota also saw a wide range of yield estimates last week. “Very wet, just had 5.7 inches of rain’” said a producer southwest of Minneapolis Friday after heavy storms. Corn on the farm was estimated at 90 bpa, with beans only 28 bpa – numbers that weren’t unusual in wet areas in the southern part of the state. But further north and west near St. Cloud corn came in at 235 bpa.

Rains also hurt crops in neighboring Wisconsin. “Cut 200 acres of beans with 30 bushel average. Too much rain.” posted a producer in the western part of the state.

One grower in Iowa looked for 235 bushel corn and 62 bushel soybeans. But crops were not ready for harvest yet.

“Corn is green but moisture is around 20%,” read the post. “Beans are green and uneven but testing 11%.”
