A growing season that started slow in some areas is ending late too. But while yields surprised farmers in some parts of the Midwest, others are ending with disappointment as growers try to wrap things up for 2017.

Yields reported last week to Feeback From The Field were lower than the previous week, but still averaged 172.6 bushels per acre for corn and 50.5 bpa for soybeans. Those compare to the 175.4 bpa and 45.9 bpa estimates USDA published Nov. 9.

“Very surprising year,” noted a producer from central Illinois who brought in 251-bushel corn and 76-bushel beans.

Those were the top yields posted last week.  At the other end of the spectrum was a central Nebraska grower with 45-bushel corn and just three-bushel beans. “Large area of poor yields,” even with irrigated fields, he said.

Yet further west in Colorado a grower noted “excellent” conditions that pushed basis lower, with “elevators at capacity.”

Rains over the past week focused on the eastern Midwest, adding to what’s already been a very challenging growing season in some parts of the region.

“Wet and cold early, very dry August and September,” said a producer in southwest Illinois with 85-bushel corn and 43-bushel soybeans. “Poor dry down on corn.”

Added another in central Ohio: “Too much rain.”
