Farmers reporting Feedback From the Field last week said corn crops over all improved, though conditions were not as strong as reported by USDA in its Monday progress updates. But growers voiced concerns about heavy rains in many areas, particularly on soybean fields that were only barely rated above average.

“Finally got rain in our area this week - almost 4 inches," wrote a producer southeast of Des Moines who said both corn and soybeans were in excellent shape. “Went from dry to water standing in places.”

Another Iowa farm, this one northeast of Omaha, also got 4 inches. While corn was rated excellent, soybeans were only fair, after a wet, grey week. “Many bean fields have not been sprayed weeds are getting above label,” was the worry.

“Losing acres and yield daily,” warned another Iowa grower who received 10 inches of rain near the Minnesota border.

Farmers east of the Mississippi River dealt with challenging conditions all spring in many areas, with summer also starting problematic. Too much rain was an issue for some.

“Would have rated both corn and beans excellent before the heavy rains as we have ponds in some fields with more rain in the forecast,” wrote a grower near I-80 in Illinois.

But other producers who were dry in the I-70 corridor from western Illinois to Kansas, received disappointing coverage.

“If we don't get a rain this week, we can kiss some corn goodbye,” said a Missouri producer in the central part of the Show-Me state where some fields were starting to tassel.
