Irrigation field day

If you want to learn about the latest in irrigation technology, don’t miss the field day on Aug. 1 at the University of Georgia’s Stripling Irrigation Research Park in Camilla, Ga.

Researchers from the UGA College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, who are pioneering new technologies for more efficient, large-scale irrigation, conduct an irrigation field day each year.

This year, in addition to new irrigation technologies, they will discuss how to use advanced cultivation methods to cope with problems caused by this year’s heavy rains.

Florida agriculture

If you think agriculture isn’t big business in Florida, think again.

Farm production and natural resource businesses in Florida generate an annual economic impact of $104 billion. This contribution includes the employment of nearly two million people in full and part-time positions, or 20 percent of all jobs in the state.

North Carolina Farm Bureau President Larry Wooten has some facts to present and a question.

First the facts:

Of the $10 billion farm gate value of agriculture in the state, $2 billion is attributed to four commodities:


• Agricultural nursery and greenhouse;


• Christmas trees;


• Fruits and vegetables;


• Tobacco. 

Then the question: What is the common need among these four commodities? The answer is a legal, stable and reliable source of farm labor. In today’s political environment, it is impossible to talk about the need for farm labor without discussing the need to fix the nation’s broken immigration system.

Virginia Ag Expo

The 2013 Virginia Ag Expo will be hosted by Land of Promise Farms, operated by the Don Horsley family, in Virginia Beach, Va. on August 1, 2013.

The Expo is the largest agricultural field day held in the Commonwealth of Virginia annually. More than 140 exhibitors and sponsors will be showcasing the latest farm equipment, goods, and services for all agricultural producers and property owners no matter how large or small. The gates open at 7:30 a.m. with field tours beginning at 8 a.m.
