The University of Minnesota Extension is again offering educational sessions for farmers wanting to learn how to maximize economic return on nitrogen investments while minimizing N losses and impact on the environment.
The day-long Nitrogen Smart training is broken into two components: the morning session covers research-based N fundamentals and the afternoon session covers more advanced material.
Overall, producers will learn about:
Sources of N for crops
How N is lost from soil and how to reduce losses
How to manage N in drainage systems
Minnesota’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy and Nitrogen Fertilizer Management Plan
Practices to refine nitrogen management, including split applications, alternative N fertilizers, soil and tissue testing and N models
Nitrogen Smart certification is valid for three years after participants complete the fundamentals course. The advanced session is available to returning participants or to new participants that attend the morning fundamentals course.

“Previous attendees can attend the morning session if they want or just come to the afternoon advanced session,” Carlson says.
No pre-registration required and there is no cost to attend.
