There is a new restaurant in Morgantown. But it’s not a chain, and there are no flashy signs. It fits the criteria for Hoosier Fare because you might not find it unless a local person tells you about it. And you might not try it without his or her endorsement.

The cafe opened earlier this year in a building that has housed various businesses in the past. “It’s not hard to find,” said Chris Parker, who invited my wife, Carla, and me to lunch there. “If you come into town from the east on Indiana State Road 135/252, you cross the Johnson/Morgan county line, and it’s on your right just before the railroad tracks.”

Danielle Ferguson operates Brew Awakenings Cafe. She is a former Indian Creek FFA member. Indian Creek High School serves two townships in Johnson County plus one in Morgan County, including Morgantown.

It’s a good down-home place for breakfast and lunch, Parker said. Parker is a Profit Planners panelist and writes Forage Corner for Indiana Prairie Farmer. He also operates the family timber, hay and livestock farm, and is retired after more than 30 years as an Extension educator in Morgan County. Like me, he likes good food.

The day we visited the cafe, Parker and I tried the Reuben sandwich. My wife tried something different. Everyone agreed that their sandwiches were tasty.

“I’m partial to breakfast here,” Parker said. “They’re still getting established, so some days the place is packed, and some days it’s not as busy yet.”

Current hours are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. EDT, Monday through Saturday. The menu features everything from biscuits and gravy for around $4 to a hot ham-and-cheese sandwich featuring Bavarian ham on Texas toast for around $6, including chips.
