Pee Dee field day set for Sept. 13

Corn, cotton, grain sorghum and soybeans will be the focus of the Pee Dee Research and Education Center field day set for Thursday, Sept. 13 near Florence, S.C.

The field day begins an 8 a.m. and concludes with a catered lunch. The Pee Dee Research and Education Center is located at 2200 Pocket Road, Darlington, S.C. 29532. Experts from Clemson University will highlight the program.

Topics covered include Corn Earworm Resistance to Bt Corn by Thomas Bilbo; Breeding Grain Sorghum for High Yield and Resistance by Rick Boyles; Long-term Insurance Coverage for Cotton Production by Dr. Todd Campbell; Identification and Management of Insects Important in Cotton by Dr. Jeremy Greene; and Cotton Variety Trials by Dr. Mike Jones. In addition, Dr. Ben Fallen will discuss breeding to improve soybean production in North Carolina and Dr. Francis Reay-Jones will highlight sugarcane aphid management in grain sorghum.

Dr. Phil Bauer will discuss using turkey litter ash as fertilizer and Dr. Matthew Cutulle will discuss weed identification and management. Dr. Lance Beecher will discuss aquaponics and Tony Melton will highlight vegetable production in the Pee Dee. Also, Dr. Rongzong Ye will discuss managing cover cropping to improve soil structure, soil productivity and soil health.
